Untethered
Peter wrote, “I know that I will soon put [this body] aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.” - 2 Peter 1:14 (NIV)
Recently my mother died in the critical care unit of our local hospital after struggling tenaciously for several weeks to hold on to life. While I prayed and read the Bible to her, she suffered what seemed a massive stroke that shook her body as a violent storm can shake a tent. A few seconds later, her body relaxed in peace. It was as if someone removed the main pole of a tent and allowed it to slowly billow to the ground.
A few minutes later the medical staff removed the tubes and wires that tethered my mother to earthly existence. Her life here on earth was over. But her soul was freed from the grip of pain and suffering.
I realized that the body is only a “tent” which will be loosed from the earth and put off as our day clothes are when night comes. Like my mother, we who know Christ have hope for eternal life where the storms of this life can no longer batter and shake our earthly tent. This is an indescribable gift.

At Whit’s End:
We all face limitations. Those who have physical, mental, or emotional disabilities are especially aware of this. Some may be blind, but they can see a new way to live. Some may be deaf, but they can hear God’s Good News. Some may be lame, but they can walk in God’s love. In addition, they have the encouragement that those disabilities are only temporary. We will all be given new bodies when Jesus returns and these bodies will be without disabilities, never to die or become sick. This can give us hope in our suffering!
